Seminar by Marina Chauvet, postdoctoral researcher at Dyneco/Pelagos

The next DYNECO seminar will be presented by Marina Chauvet, postdoctoral researcher at DYNECO/PELAGOS on: The importance of parasites in regulating aquatic food webs: what about microsporidia?

Thursday 20 June 2024 at 11 a.m. in the DYNECO meeting room (Ifremer Plouzané, Building 216)

The seminar will be held in french.

Summary:
Microsporidia are a large group of eukaryotic parasites related to fungi, known mainly as parasites of organisms of interest (beneficial insects, edible fish and crustaceans, humans). More than 69% of microsporidia are found in aquatic environments, where they are known to impact crustacean and fish communities. However, there are very few descriptions of microsporidia parasitising organisms at the base of food webs (e.g. protists, microplankton). Their impact on the structure and functioning of aquatic ecosystems is therefore largely unknown and not taken into account. Based on a comparison of different environments as well as a temporal study, using a combination of different approaches (targeted metabarcoding, co-occurrence networks, in situ hybridisation, isolation of host-parasite pairs), the aim of my thesis work was to reveal the extent of the diversity of microsporidia and their host spectrum in aquatic ecosystems in order to consider their impact on the structure and functioning of food webs.
During this seminar, I will mainly present my thesis work, as well as the research carried out during my previous post-doctorate (eukaryotic parasites, long-reads sequencing approach), before moving on more quickly to the research topic that brings me to DYNECO for this post-doctorate.
