Titre: Understanding estuarine dynamics using idealized models

Résumé:

I will focus on understanding suspended sediment dynamics and phytoplankton dynamics in estuaries. There are various complex processes that lead to sediment transport, formation of estuarine turbidity maxima (ETM) and phytoplankton blooms. Climate change and human interventions affect each of these processes in different ways. Hence, to understand the potential effects of climate change and human interventions in estuaries, we need to understand the most dominant processes. To this end, I have developed an idealized open source model called iFlow. During the presentation, I will firstly discuss the type of research questions that can be answered using idealized models and will introduce the basic concepts of iFlow. Next, I will demonstrate the sediment dynamics module by showing the evolution of sediment transport processes in the Loire estuary between 1900 and 2000. I will mainly explain the processes that caused the dramatic increase in sediment concentrations that was observed in the Loire. Finally, the phytoplankton dynamics module in iFlow is only in its first stages. I will demonstrate some first results identifying the main processes affecting phytoplankton dynamics in the Delaware estuary (USA) and outline plans for future model developments.
